When the journalist Napoleon Hill interviewed the industrialist Andrew Carnegie in 1908, Carnegie fell so well Hill decided that he would share all the strategies that made him from a poor immigrant to one of the richest men in the world.

From that moment, Hill dedicated his career to understand the labor ethics of successful people such as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, collecting them to create their own philosophy and translate them into articles, books and readings for normal people who wanted to achieve more in their lifetime. His book “Think and Grow Rich” of 1937 is one of the best selling of all time.

Before beginning to write the books, Hill directed two magazines with articles that were the basis for his most famous work. In the inaugural 1921 edition of his magazine, Hill wrote “The Magic Ladder to Success”, an essay based on the speech he gave on a tour of the United States and which he would later include in a 1930 book. After spending 12 years analyzing more than 12,000 men and women, both successful entrepreneurs and ordinary people, Hill unveiled 16 elements of exceptional leaders that anyone can practice.

  • They have a definite purpose in their life. “Keep in mind that your purpose and your plan to achieve it can be modified from time to time … the important thing is that you understand the meaning of always working with a goal in mind and with a well-structured plan,” says Hill.
  • They have confidence in themselves. In order to have ambitious goals, you need to believe that you can follow the plans to achieve them. When you believe in yourself, others tend to believe in you too.
  • They show initiative. The only way to grow in the corporate hierarchy or build your own business is by looking for other things to do once you have done your homework.
  • They are imaginative. When you do not have initiative or creativity “95 percent of the people of the world do not have an objective in life”.
  • They are active. Maybe you graduated from prestigious universities and read the most important historical books, but that does not mean anything if you do not convert that knowledge into actions.
  • They are enthusiastic. Do what you love or you will not have the energy to be truly successful.
  • Practice self-control. Hill says he did not start being successful until he learned that he was working against him when he was arrogant or angry. “Nobody becomes a leader until he learns to control himself.”
  • They go beyond what is asked of them. The most successful people outperform the competition and, when they reach the top, compete with themselves.
  • They are extremely nice. When you are charismatic and take care of relationships with others, you build a network of people who are willing to help you when you ask.
  • They know how to separate the truth from what is doubtful. They know that their actions have ramifications for other people, leaders understand that they can not believe everything they hear or read and learn to tear the truth out of others’ worldviews.
  • Focus. Successful people are able to focus their energy and abilities towards specific goals without getting distracted by irrelevant things.
  • They are persistent. Those who are capable of success are not stopped by unavoidable challenges and delays that cross their path.
  • They are resistant. “When you begin to realize that failure is an important part of anyone’s education, you will not see it with fear. You will be sure that there will be no failures. ” No one rose from a blow or defeat without being stronger and wiser than before.
  • They are understanding. In “Think and Grow Rich,” Hill writes that it is no coincidence that history is full of tyrants and dictators who were overthrown. The most successful leaders work in harmony with their team, not dominating them.
  • They work hard. Hill says this sounds very simple, but it is important to remember that even if you achieve your greatest goal, you need to continue to strive or risk losing everything.
  • They are empathic. Hill’s favorite philosophical idea is “The Golden Rule,” which states: “Treat others as you would like them to treat you.” He uses it as the final rung of the ladder for true success. Hill writes:

The golden rule acts as a barrier to all man’s tendencies towards the destructive use of energy that comes from the development of the other qualities described in this ladder. It is the thing that serves as an antidote to the harm that a man does without knowledge and power, which guides men to the intelligent and constructive way of using those qualities that develops from the use of the steps of this ladder.
